Highlights

• Following DVT diagnosis, most patients coped well psychologically in the acute phase
• Almost a fifth of patients reported significant levels of distress following DVT diagnosis
• No specific patient characteristics emerged as being predictive of increased distress
• Fear, anxiety, pain, reduced mobility and impaired ability to perform activities all contributed to distress following DVT
