Highlights

• A total of 52 % patients with polycythemia vera have high measured plasma volume.

• Having high plasma volume is associated with higher thrombotic risk.

• Expansion in actual plasma volume is associated with higher measured red cell mass but lower hematocrit.

• Estimation formulas return lower plasma volumes when compared to actual volume.

• Strauss-Duarte formula may be improved by additionally considering male sex and elevated platelet count.
